Sensei Rusty explained the basic steps and skills needed to learn karate, which are the same as what is needed to succeed in school. 8th grade AVID students Savannah and Jewel performed a special martial art performance known as “kata”. Many were impressed by their skill and concentration!
One memorable lesson they taught us was the meaning of the word “OSU”. OSU can be used as a greeting, a thank you, and confirmation. It is used for saying thank you to your opponents for helping you improve your skills and knowledge. Students were encouraged to also thank their teachers and parents when given a ton of homework or getting scolded for having a messy room; both situations are only to improve us as young people so we should thank them for it.
Many 7th graders thought that the presentation was awesome, impactful, and fun!
