On October 16, the AVID Ambassador and Media club attended an overnighter at Ewa Makai Middle School. The overnighter’s purpose was to not only get work done, but also to help bond the two clubs together, while doing fun activities together, such as hide-and-go-seek. The overnighter was filled with a lot of laughter, screams, and work.
The different AVID Ambassador committees (Public Relations, Media/Video Production, Public Speaking, and Service Learning/Historians), were all assigned various tasks they needed to complete within the 2 hour limit they were given. The AVID Public Relations group had to create AVID recruitment flyers that would be given to different schools to help their students join AVID. The Service Learning/Historians group had to take pictures of the different groups working and they also had to plan other service projects that the Ambassadors could do later in the quarter/year. The Media/Tech group had to create a presentation for AVID recruitment for the 7th graders that would be shown in different classrooms around the school. And lastly, the Public Speaking group did speaking exercises that could help improve their thinking and speaking in front of a large crowd, under pressure.
After working hard in their committees, the Ambassadors had a some time to work with each other, bond, and enjoy the rest of the night! They split into 4 groups and did an activity that required hard work, teamwork, and creative ideas. The Ambassadors had a task to build a “house” or something to withstand a “surprise something” thrown at it. They had about 10-15 minutes to build it with only the materials provided (2 long pieces of tape, 2 cardboard box pieces and newspaper). They had to include all the materials into the house and they also had to put a cup in the house. All was explained when the Ambassador’s were given a marshmallow with a mini launcher. They had to either knock down the cup or make the marshmallow into the cup. The Ambassadors definitely had a blast while challenging the other groups! Their Ambassador skills really seemed to pull off in this activity!
The morning of October 17 consisted of the first (mini) service project of the school year, for the Ambassadors. They did a campus beautification project, in hopes to help Ewa Makai’s presence and overall environment. They were split up into two groups, one going to the 8th grade courtyard to rake up leaves, and the other going to the back parking lot, where they picked up trash and pulled weeds. The Ambassadors were able to make the parking lot and the courtyard look a lot more spacious and clean in only an hour and 30 minutes! Working hard is definitely something that runs in the Ambassador club.
Overall, the overnighter was definitely an experience to never forget, and hopefully, the 7th grade AVID Ambassadors will carry on the fun to next year!
