On September 22, 2015, our 8th grade AVID students took a field trip to visit James Campbell High School to experience what high school life is really like. Our students got to witness firsthand the differences and similarities between EMMS and JCHS (their future school).
The AVID students visited eight different classes, to see different subjects and what to expect when they become Freshmen next year. Each student got to visit at least three AVID elective classes, each in a different grade level, and at least two AP classes (AP Literature, AP World History, AP Math). Students learned that not only does AVID get more challenging each year, but so do other subjects.
Some differences that the students noticed right away would definitely have to do with the campus and student life. The lack of AC in most classrooms was a very big and most mentioned difference, but there were many other differences that were mentioned, such as how different the AVID elective classes work, and what type of work the students do. Similarities were also mentioned during AVID Tutorials.
Overall, our 8th graders now have a better sense of what to expect as a James Campbell High School Saber next year.
